Blob fish is a strange and weirdly shaped deep-sea creature and rarely found by humans. They are native to Australian and Tasmanian deep-sea area. Blob fish lives in 600m-1200m deep and in very high pressure area, a few times higher than at the sea surface. Blob fish has gelatinous skin and its density is slightly lighter than water’s density, making them able to float around in the deep sea instead of spending their energy for swimming. In fact, Blob fish does not have many active muscles in their body, causing them to only float around above sea surface. Blob fish eats mostly whatever in front of them, reducing their energy for hunting food. They mostly eat small crabs. Blob fish can grow up to 30cm long. This species can live as long as 130 years old, just like any other deep-sea creatures due to their extremely slow rate of reproduction, growth and aging.
Female Blob fish will lay thousands of eggs at once, and it will stay with its egg floating above the sea floor. Sometimes a female Blob fish can be found lying eggs next to another female species. Blob fish can be found underwater with a ridiculously strange face, but this species will die as soon as it gets out of water. Blob fish can be caught by deep-sea trawling since they live in the same area as lobsters and crabs. This kind of fishing activity in Australia have threatened the population of Blob fish since they only live in the surrounding area around Australia. Deep-sea trawling in Australia has caused this fish currently facing extinction because sometimes they got caught inside fishermen’s nets while they are trawling for lobsters or crabs.
